WHAT IS ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY
Orthognathic surgery penables the correction of the position of the facial bones and the achievement of a proper bite, by means of maxillary and mandibular bone movements to achieve the perfect balance between all the patient’s facial features in a safe, quick and painless manner, resulting in a harmonious face both aesthetically and functionally.
Orthognathic surgery is not only intended for patients with significant facial deformities, but also for those whose bite is affected by an incorrect position of the teeth and jawbones, which an orthodontist cannot resolve on their own.
Orthognathic surgery enables the resolution of all problems caused by irregular growth of the facial bones, which lead to difficulties with biting, speaking and sleeping, as well as aesthetic concerns.

We guarantee:
Main malformations of the jaw
The abnormality in the bite is due to an anomaly in the position of the bones of the face, which are the upper jaw and the lower jaw.
The jaw is the area in which the teeth are housed; there is the upper jaw and the lower jaw, the latter being what we know as the mandible.
Facial deformities arise during the phase of growth of the patients and become stable by the end of the same when one or several bones of the face (jaw, maxilla, chin, cheekbones, nose…) exhibit an growth abnormality and alter the harmony of the face, may cause problems such as apnoea during sleep, disorders in the joint formed by the upper part of the jaw and the temporal bone of the skull, problems with the alignment of the teeth or lack of aesthetic harmony between others.
They must be corrected from an aesthetic point of view but above all also functional and achieve a correct occlusion and not experience difficulties when it comes to speaking or chewing.

Types of orthognathic surgery:
This type of surgery must be performed by a maxillofacial surgeon, that is to say, the only specialist qualified to treat the bones and soft tissues of the facial area.

- In cases of protrusion of the lower jaw, when the lower teeth and the chin are are set back in relation to the rest of the face
- From closing of the bite open, when the teeth upper and lower do not touch at the closing the mouth and leave a gap.
- Due to mandibular asymmetry, when the chin and the teeth are misaligned towards one side.
As we have seen previously, orthognathic surgery is closely related to orthodontics, branch of dentistry which is responsible for aligning the teeth and correcting the bite.
Therefore, in order to correct these deformities of the bite, the process always involves collaboration between the orthodontist and the maxillofacial surgeon.
How is orthognathic surgery performed
This type of procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia of the patient. As for the duration of the surgery, it depends on the complexity of each case and patient, generally tends to last for a period of between 3 and 4 hours.
The post-operative period is painless, although there may be some facial swelling which subsides returns to normal from the first week, The patient can return to work within 10 -15 days after the surgical procedure.
During the first 30 or 40 days, the patient should follow a soft diet which should begin a8> soft which should be started on the very day of the procedure.
