WHAT IS A LIP LIFT?
The lip lift or lip lift is a minor surgical procedure that lasts a7> minor surgical procedure lasting around 60 minutes, which is carried out under local anaesthesia and allows the distance between the lip and the nose to be reduced. This correction allows the lips to a27> more plump and rejuvenated immediately.
As time goes by, it seems as though our lips are losing volume. But that isn’t actually the case. Over the years, the distance from the upper lip to the nose becomes increasingly longer, due to a loss of elasticity in the skin and the tissues around the mouth. The lip curves inwards towards the mouth, resulting in a thinner, more elongated lip.
When this happens, using substances for filling would be a mistake, since there is no loss of volume a10> there is no loss of volume and we would give the lip a “duck-like appearance ” somewhat unnatural and we will hide the teeth when speaking or when smiling.

As we have seen before, with the passing years the upper lip becomes thinner and narrower and the filtrum ( the area that connects the nose to the upper lip) becomes longer, with the result that the upper lip appears to lose volume.
To address this issue, in 1971 Cardoso & Sperli developed the ‘lip lift’ procedure, a surgical technique that involves lifting the upper lip and excising an elliptical section of skin located beneath the nose. This technique has been refined, and today it is possible to achieve excellent aesthetic results.
Dr San Miguel is a specialist in the various techniques for a6> Lip Lift and offers his patients a whole range a11> range of options to achieve some perfect lips.
THE LIPS WITHIN THE STRUCTURE OF THE FACE
The lips (including also the teeth) are the part of the face to which we pay pay most attention when someone looks at them. This may be due to the fact that it is a part that gives gives rise to the expression of emotions and at the same time provides information about the verbal content of what is being said.
How is the lip lift performed
-
The surgeon determines the area to be treated by marking the reference points.
-
Inject local anaesthetic into the marked area.
-
Make an incision in the lip hidden inside the nose.
-
Cut off the excess part and
-
Performs an intradermal suture that leaves a scar that is barely visible to the naked eye.
Post-operative care for a lip lift:
A lip lift is a surgical procedure that is minimally invasive and painless, after the operation, the patient:
- You will notice a slight swelling of the treated area for the first 2–3 days.
- The external points are removed by the end of a7> 7–10 days and the internal ones are reabsorbed little by little.
- The visible and palpable scar after the operation fades away after the first month
Results:
-
The filtrum is reduced
-
The vermilion of the lips deepens and becomes more pronounced
-
The lip enhances the appearance and adds character to the face
-
The effects are permanent and immediate

WHAT ARE SOME ATTRACTIVE LIPS?
A pair of lips are attractive when they give rise to five circumstances:
- The upper lip and the lower lip have a certain fullness. So then some lips that are thick are more attractive, slightly more so in women and less so in men.
- The shape of the lips must be the right one, with a Cupid’s clearly defined arch, some corners of the lips that are not drooping and the presence of three lobules on the upper lip and two on the lower lip.
- There must be a proper proportion between the upper and lower lips, with an upper lip that is two-thirds the size of the lower a14> lower lip in the case of women and ½ in the case of men.
- The line of the smile defined by the upper lip must be a7> show at least 2–4 mm of teeth central incisors.
- Finally, the millimetres that separate the upper lip from the nasal base (a distance known as the philtrum) must be be be 14 mm in women (with a variance of 3 mm) and 17 mm in men.

The beauty of the lips depends on the the shape and volume being appropriate, a balance between the upper and lower lips, which allows a glimpse of the incisors, and that they are at a correct distance from the nose.
PROCEDURES FOR ACHIEVING SOME LIPs ATTRACTIVE
To achieve a fuller appearance for the lips, you you can use various types of materials for fillers, or alternatively one may perform V-Y surgery. The materials used for filling may be natural or synthetic, and may be more or less long-lasting. With all the experience gained, it is recommended to use hyaluronate and filler made from adipose tissue from the patient (lipofilling).
Procedures designed to increase lip volume do not increase the amount of tooth visible (in some cases, they have the opposite effect) and do not reduce the distance between the philtrum and the teeth (in some cases, they have the opposite effect), although they may be the most suitable treatments when the philtrum is normal and the amount of tooth visible is adequate.
A lip lift can be extremely useful for reducing the length of the philtrum whilst increasing the exposure of the incisors. Although the direct lip lift procedure (removal of skin tissue just above the lip) exists, it can result in an excessively noticeable scar. For this reason, the indirect lip lift technique (specifically using the ‘bullhorn’ incision) was proposed, in which the incision is made just below the nostrils.
Other procedures, such as the corner lift, are capable of alter the angle of the corners of the lips, despite the fact that a14> that its indications are very scarce due to the excessive visibility of the scar that results from this surgery.
EL INDIRECT LIP LIFT
The lip lift procedure that delivers the best aesthetic results is the indirect lip lift. Specifically, the incision is made beneath the nostrils, and its shape may vary depending on the individual case. The amount of skin tissue removed allows us to adjust the length of the philtrum to normal levels. Although there are various ways of making the incision, the ‘bullhorn’ technique allows for more precise control over the result, as it shortens not only the central region of the lips but also (albeit to a lesser extent) the lateral portions. Other procedures, such as the double duck, act solely on the lateral part, with a lesser effect on the central area.

WHEN IS IT RECOMMENDED TO UNDERGO A LIP LIFT?
A lip lift of the lips is recommended in those situations in which the filtrum has greater length than normal, and in those situations in which the teeth are not visible when a19> when one is speaking or with the mouth open.
The average value of the filtrum in people of female and young age is around 14 mm. However, despite the normal values are around 10 –11 and 17 millimetres. Outside of these values it is considered that the phyltrum is too long or short respectively.
The average length of the filtrum in 29-year-old men is 17 millimetres, ranging from 21 to 13 millimetres. There are cases where the filtrum is longer than average but still within the normal range. In such cases, the amount of tissue to be removed must always remain within the normal range.
A lip lift is not a procedure designed to add thickness to the upper lip, although in some patients a noticeable rotation is achieved, giving the lips a fuller appearance.
Therefore, in certain circumstances, such as a lip with little volume and a long philtrum, a combination of the lip lift technique with the filler procedures a19> procedures involving filler or injection into the lips.

The phyltrum is the length that exists between the subnasal point (located centrally, of greatest concavity between the columella and the lip) and the point Labrale Superius (located centrally on the arch of Cupid, between the lip with vermilion and the lip “white”).
